Shopping at a supermarket can be very tiring and exhausting. Add to that, the long wait for checkout. And if there is any glitch in the billing system, the long wait can drag on endlessly.

But there are times when something going wrong at the store’s end can turn right for the customers. As it did recently for around 50 shoppers at the Hannaford supermarket in West Lebanon, New Hampshire. These shoppers were all waiting in queue for checkout when slowly, the cash registers started shutting down.

Most stores use an online system for payments. And around mid-morning, the store started facing technical problems. Its routers were having trouble connecting with the server. The management thought it might get fixed, but slowly the cash registers started shutting down. By 2 p.m. all the registers were shut, and there were still about 50 customers waiting for checkout.

The store staff were not sure how long it would take to get the problem fixed. So, after a quick call with the senior management, the store manager Shawn Quelch announced that the customers can take the groceries for free!

Now isn’t it great! Instead of waiting endlessly for the system to be up and running, the store decided to save the people’s time and energy. Needless to say, the customers were elated.

Though the store manager is not sure about the exact worth of groceries given for free, he estimates it to be between $3,000 and $5,000.

This sort of thing doesn’t happen often, but when it does it’s a stroke of luck. What do you think of this?
