In what seems like a futuristic move, soon our cars will be talking to traffic signals! Top car makers like Volkswagen, Honda, and Ford are testing a new technology that will enable cars to communicate with traffic lights and work together to ease congestion, increase safety, and cut emissions.

The system will be based on the Car2X technology WLANp (ITS-G5). In this system, traffic signals will use WLANp (ITS-G5) to transmit lights. Vehicles that are equipped with the Car2X technology will be able to process this information and alert the driver accordingly. For example, it can show drivers when all traffic signals on their route are green, aiding drivers to plan the trip accordingly and avoiding traffic snarls, in turn, saving fuel, time, and money. This technology will also be compatible with driverless cars. Volkswagen plans to roll out cars equipped with this system by next year.
