Future of footwear - Smart shoes by Nike

Nike has launched a new shoe, and this is no ordinary one. This is a smart shoe! And what does that mean? It customizes itself based on an athletes performance in real-time. How’s that for a shoe?

Nike Adapt BB, priced at $350 is a self-lacing smart basketball shoe. Using a power lacing system called Fit Adapt, the shoe can tighten or loosen itself based on the requirement of the user. A custom motor and gear train along with accelerometers and gyroscopes make all of this possible. All this can be done using the Nike Adapt mobile app. The shoe can certainly work without a smartphone; however, for the customizations, a smartphone is required.

The VP Creative Director of Innovation at Nike, Eric Avar explains that a basketball player’s foot changes during the course of the play. The shoe adapts to these changes and will help to improve the performance of the player. For instance, players can loosen the shoe during a timeout and tighten it during the game.
