In a bid to promote vaccination against the coronavirus pandemic, restaurants in Dubai are offering lucrative discounts to diners who are vaccinated.

For instance, three restaurants run by Gates Hospitality are offering 10 per cent discount to diners if they have received the first dose of the vaccine, and 20 per cent if they have received the second.

To avail the discounts, diners are expected to show proof of inoculation, such as a medical certificate confirming that they have received the vaccine.

The government of the United Arab Emirates, which comprises of seven Emirates – Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah – had approved vaccines made by the Chinese firm Sinopharm and the US-German collaboration of PfizerBioNTech.

The UAE has vaccinated about 2.5 million of its 10 million population. The rate at which it has vaccinated its citizens is the second best in the world, and it is only behind Israel.

While some appreciated this move by the hospitality sector of offering discounts, it also raised a few eyebrows with people questioning whether this move will serve its purpose.

What do you think about this initiative? Will it lure more people to get vaccinated? Let us know your views in the comments section below.
