A recent picture of some beautiful clouds has gone viral on social media. And what is so special about them? These clouds look like beautiful waves.

Amy Christie Hunter spotted these majestic clouds at the Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia, photographed them, and put them up on Facebook with the following message.

“Very cool clouds rolling over the mountain tops at Smith Mountain Lake this evening. They are called Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds. I sent the photo to our local news station and the meteorologist replied to me saying they are very rare and usually not this defined.”

And the rest, as they say, is history.

In no time, the post went viral. It has appeared on local and national news and has also garnered hundreds of likes, comments, and shares.

And it is not surprising why! The clouds look like a beautiful picture painted on a serene canvas. The thousands of comments on the picture are a testimony to the fact that nature is a mystery!

The Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds occur when the conditions in the atmosphere are unstable. These clouds form when there is a difference in wind speed and air density between adjacent layers of air, and when the top layers move faster than the bottom ones. These ocean-wave-like-clouds are ephemeral – they do not last for very long. Scientists believe that they last just for about ten minutes before they collapse.
