One of the Biggest Diamonds Ever Found in Botswana

A 1,758-carat diamond, weighing around 352 grams, was found recently in the African nation of Botswana. This makes the diamond the second-largest in history, only behind the Cullinan Diamond that was 3,106-carats and that was recovered near Pretoria in South Africa in 1905. This diamond with dimensions of 83mm X 62mm X 46mm is the largest ever to be unearthed in Botswana.

The diamond was unearthed from the Karowe mine in Botswana, which is one of the biggest producers of diamonds in the world. The Karowe mine has been renowned for unearthing big gems. Earlier, in 2015, a 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona diamond was discovered; it fetched a whopping $53 million.

However, this diamond might not fetch a record-breaking price despite its size. This is because, according to the company, the diamond is a near gem of variable quality. This makes it unlikely that the diamond can yield valuable polished diamonds.

What is Lucara Diamond Corp.?

Lucara Diamond Corporation is a Canadian diamond mining company and it owns the Karowe diamond mine in Botswana. According to its website, it is one of the world’s foremost producers of large, high-quality diamonds. Since its inception, it has sold 180 diamonds for more than $1 million each and 10 single diamonds that cost more than $10 million each.
