In a great step to reduce climate change, the state of Colorado in the United States has unveiled a plan to reduce heat-trapping air pollution by 90 per cent by 2050.

“This is an issue for all humanity and life on the planet,” Democratic Governor Jared Polis said. “It’s very much in our interest to do our part. We have a climate-driven economy. Hundreds of thousands of jobs in Colorado are climate-dependent. And we want to position Colorado as a climate and green energy leader.”

As part of the initiative, the governor has committed to the state moving to 100% renewable energy by 2040. Also, state agencies will enforce cuts in pollution levels at various power plants, oil and gas industry sites, and in many other buildings. Further, the citizens will be incentivized with tax benefits for transitioning from gas-powered vehicles to zero-emission ones.

The draft plan, known as the Colorado Greenhouse Gas Pollution Reduction Roadmap, was released recently and it sets pollution-cut goals for a wide range of industries such as agriculture, transportation, oil and gas, and utilities.

The state of Colorado has experienced one of its largest wildfires in the recent past, which has resulted in a massive deterioration to its air quality.
