Bentley to go all-electric by 2030

In a great move to reach carbon neutrality, the luxury car maker Bentley announced that it would cease making fossil fuel cars by 2030. It also revealed that it intends to phase out combustion engines totally.

With its first electric vehicle due to be launched in 2025, the Volkswagen-owned brand headquartered in the United Kingdom plans to sell only plug-in hybrids and electric cars by 2026 and go fully electric by 2030. This move to become a pioneer in sustainable luxury mobility is part of an initiative called Beyond 100, whereby the brand intends to transform its operations and products to become a green and environmentally sustainable brand.

“Since 1919, Bentley has defined luxury grand touring. Being at the forefront of progress is part of our DNA – the original Bentley boys were pioneers and leaders. Now, as we look Beyond100, we will continue to lead by reinventing the company and becoming the world’s benchmark luxury car business,” Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bentley Motors, said.

As part of the Beyond 100 plan, Bentley intends to become an end-to-end carbon neutral luxury car brand by 2030. Apart from developing electrified models, the car maker also plans improvements on its operational environmental impact. In line with this goal, Bentley’s production facility in Crewe in England became the first luxury automotive factory in the United Kingdom to be certified carbon neutral by the Carbon Trust.

The carmaker has also pledged to not use plastic at its factory by 2030. Further, to promote inclusivity, it will increase the proportion of women and people from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds in its management ranks to 30% from 20% in 2020.

The shift to electric cars is also part of a strategy by Volkswagen, the parent company of Bentley, to become a leader in electric vehicles: Volkswagen has set an ambitious goal of selling 1 million electric cars per year by 2025.

“Within a decade, Bentley will transform from a 100-year-old luxury car company to a new, sustainable, wholly ethical role model for luxury,” Hallmark said.
