It was a breathtaking sight to watch!

A beautiful pink supermoon – the biggest and the brightest of this year – was visible to millions across the world on the evening of Tuesday, 8th April.

Supermoons occur when the moon is closest to the Earth, making the moon appear larger and brighter than usual. Generally, supermoons are 7 per cent bigger and 15 per cent brighter than the usual full moons.

Interestingly, the moon does not look pink but is named so after the pink flower ‘Wild Ground Phlox’, which blossoms at this time and is typically found in North America. Pink refers to the color of the flower not the color of the moon.

This year is expected to have four supermoons, with the next due on 7th May.

Stargazing enthusiasts and photographers around the world took to social media to share their pictures of this marvel. Soon enough, #pinkmoon and #supermoon were trending all over social media.

Aren’t these pictures absolutely breathtaking? What a mystifying thing this planet Earth is! Do you agree?
