The right to education is one of the most fundamental rights of any human being. It is enshrined in article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However, not everyone today has access to education. And statistics prove this unfortunate fact.

According to the United Nations, about 265 million children and adolescents across the world do not have the opportunity to enter or complete school. Further, 617 million children and adolescents cannot read or do basic math. Close to 4 million refugees and children are out of school. Aren’t these statistics appalling? The right to education is being violated, and we must, together, work towards this problem.

Education is important for sustainable growth, and inclusive and equitable quality education must be available to all.

The International Day of Education is observed by the United Nations to highlight the importance of education and its necessity to human well-being and sustainable development.

Theme for 2020 International Day of Education

The theme for International Day of Education 2020 is ‘Learning for people, planet, prosperity, and peace.’ According to the official website, this theme “highlights the integrated nature of education, its humanistic aims, as well as its centrality to our collective development ambitions. It also gives stakeholders and partners flexibility to tailor the celebration for diverse audiences, a variety of contexts and for priority themes.”

The first International Day of Education was observed in 2019 and this year will be only the second time when this day is observed.

On this day, let’s ensure that we do our bit to promote education in the lives of all our near ones.
