Human Rights Day is observed each year on 10th December by the United Nations. It is on this day in 1948 that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. The UDHR is a document that proclaims “the inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.”

Interestingly, this document holds the Guinness World Record as the most translated document in the world. It was also the first enunciation of human rights across the world.

Theme of 2019 Human Rights Day

The theme of the Human Rights Day 2019 is ‘Youth Standing up for Human Rights.’ This theme seeks to underscore the importance of the youth as a source of inspiration for a brighter and better future. It also seeks to celebrate and acknowledge the role of the youth as constructive agents of change in the world.

The very essence of a society is the equal rights of all people that inhabit it. Each and every person in a society is entitled to all rights such as political, civil, economic, social, and cultural. And this must be irrespective of their ethnicity, gender, race, and social status.

On this Human Rights Day, let’s strive to ensure that, world over, all humans are given access to their basic rights.
