Iceland: Aerial footage shows volcano eruption near capital Reykjavik

A volcano erupted in the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland, southwest of the capital Reykjavík recently, and social media was flooded with the spectacular images. Aerial footage showed the lava snaking its way down after the eruption.

The last eruption at this site occurred around 800 years ago.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) confirmed that the fissure is about 500-700 metres long (1,640-2,300ft) at Fagradalsfjall on Reykjanes peninsula. The lava area spanned less than one square kilometer.

On 20th March, the IMO said that the volcanic activity had “somewhat decreased;” however, the region is being closely monitored for any untoward incident.
