Amid mounting complaints about decades about bear activity in the area resulting in massive property damage, officers with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) decided to probe into the matter occurring in Shenandoah region’s Warren County. They were surprised to find out that a Virginia man was secretly feeding bears to safeguard them from poachers. According to officials, this is an outright violation of “bear no-feeding” law.
On furthering the investigation, even stranger facts surfaced. Officers with the DGIF searched the man’s property and found a fence that obstructed the view from the road. The bear-feeding activity had continued for the last 10 years behind that fence, escaping the sight of DGIF.
The man claimed that he had been spending over $10,000 a year on food for the bears.
