Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu defeated 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 to win the 2019 U.S Open final and her maiden Grand Slam title. In the process, the nineteen-year-old became the first Canadian to ever win a tennis major and the first teenager to win a Grand Slam since Maria Sharapova won the U. S Open in 2006.

Interestingly, she is also the first tennis player born in the 2000s to reach a Grand Slam final.

Andreescu showed nerves of steel in defeating Williams, denying her the elusive 24th major.

“This year has been a dream come true,” Andreescu told the audience after her win.

“I am beyond grateful and truly blessed. I’ve worked really hard for this moment. To play on this stage against Serena – a true legend of the sport – is amazing.”

Congratulations poured in from across the world for Andreescu. The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau also took to social media to congratulate her for this remarkable feat.

Félicitations @Bandreescu_! 🇨🇦 Tu as écrit une page d’histoire et tout le pays est très fier de toi. #SheTheNorth https://t.co/DKCL8IIjde

Andreescu’s rise this year has been nothing short of phenomenal and she has been one of the most talked-about players. She has already won over six of the top ten players this year – Caroline Wozniacki, Elina Svitolina, Angelique Kerber, Kiki Bertens and Karolina Pliskova.

Is this a new era in women’s tennis? Only time will tell..
