The 2019 Oscars are HERE!

Rami Malek, Olivia Colman, Regina King and Mahershala Ali pose with their Oscars.

The 2019 Oscars have been awarded, and boy, some big surprises came up! Women, especially women of colour, won big at the 91st Academy Awards, the show was without a host, and Rami Malek, awarded the best actor for his performance in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ had a big fall shortly after the event concluded. That’s not all. The 2019 Oscars truly celebrated diversity and gender, with a record seven women and men of colour winning the coveted trophies..

‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ a biopic of Freddie Mercury and Queen, won the maximum number of awards – a total of 4. This included the best actor, film editing, sound editing, and sound mixing. ‘Roma,’ ‘Black Panther,’ and ‘Green Book’ won three each.

Surprisingly, this year did not have any major host, and it relied on stars giving out individual awards. This was after Kevin Hart pulled out of hosting the awards after a controversy regarding homophobic tweets. This was also the first time in 30 years that such an event occurred.

However, the performances were worth a mention. The event opened with performances by the rock band Queen with former ‘America Idol’ contestant Adam Lambert. Also, Lady Gaga gave a fantastic performance with Bradley Cooper. They performed the song ‘Shallow’ from ‘A Star is Born.’ Further, Jennifer Husdon’s performance was worth a mention.

Women won big at the Oscars this year, with two members of the crew of ‘Black Panther’ also becoming the first black artists for being awarded in that category. Ruth Carter won the award for the best costume design whereas Hannah Beachler was awarded the Oscar for production design.

Diversity was also acknowledged and appreciated as three out of the top four awards in acting were awarded to non-white actors. Apart from Malek, Regina King and Mahershala Ali won the awards for the best supporting actress and actor respectively. In the process, Ali became the only second black actor after Denzel Washington to win two Oscars. His earlier one came in 2017 for playing a drug dealer in ‘Moonlight.’

Olivia Colman, who won the Best Actress trophy for ‘The Favourite’ was also the first British actress in 10 years to win the award. She sneaked away the award from the favourite Glenn Close. Unfortunately, the Oscars have been elusive for Close: she became the most nominated actor living actor to never win the award. She has been nominated for a total of seven times until today.

Further, ‘Roma’ became the first film from Mexico to win the award in the category of best foreign film. For the same film, Alfonso Cuaron won the best director and the best cinematographer.

Meanwhile, Marvel Studios won its first Oscar ever when Ruth Carter won the award for the best costume. It won two other awards – the best production design and best original score. Further, it created history by becoming the first superhero movie to ever be nominated for the Best Picture category.
