Freddie Mercury has been an icon in the world of music. Period.

The lead vocalist of the rock band Queen, this singer, songwriter, and record producer has inspired generations with his music.

He has been awarded multiple honours and accolades for his contribution to the world of music, and his legacy, even today, lives on.

And now, Freddie, born Farrokh Bulsara, has been given another honour. A suburban street in London has been named after him!

The street, located in Feltham, West London, has now been named the Freddie Mercury Close. This is exactly where Freddie and his family settled in after moving to London from Zanzibar in present day Tanzania.

However, this is not where the Bulsara family lived: they lived in the vicinity at 22 Gladstone Avenue – a location that was marked with a blue plaque in 2016. Blue plaques are used in the United Kingdom to commemorate those locations that have historical significance.

The ceremony was attended by a host of people, including Kashmira Cooke, Freddie’s sister.

Who was Freddie Mercury?

Born on 5th September 1946, Freddie Mercury was the lead vocalist of the British rock band, Queen. Often considered one of the greatest lead singers in the history of rock music, Mercury was also known for his charismatic stage persona. He formed the band Queen in 1970 with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor.

Unfortunately, Mercury passed away at the ripe age of 45 in 1991 due to complications from AIDS. However, his legacy continues to live on.

In 2018, Rami Malek portrayed the character of Freddie Mercury in the film ‘A Bohemian Rhapsody,’ which became the highest-grossing musical biographical movie of all time. For his performance as Mercury, Malek won an Academy Award, the BAFTA, and the Golden Globe.
