Sheikh Hasina Wins third Term as Bangladesh Premier

Sheikh Hasina wins third term as Bangladesh Premier

The Awami League party, led by incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, won 287 of the 298 parliamentary seats in the Bangladesh general election. With this win, Hasina won her third term as the Prime Minister, consolidating her 10-year long reign on the South Asian country. She has been serving as the premier since 2009.

The primary opposition party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won just seven seats. It has fiercely rejected the results of this election, claiming that the election was marred with vote-rigging, irregularities, violence, and intimidation.

This election was also the first in a decade in which all the major political parties took part. In the 2014 general election, the major opposition party BNP had boycotted the election.

While Sheikh Hasina is credited with spearheading massive economic growth in Bangladesh, she has also been accused of being authoritative in terms of suppressing dissent and abusing human rights.
