Elon Musk’s SpaceX launched the Falcon 9 rocket carrying a GPS satellite on 23rd December, marking its first national security space mission for the United States of America. The GPS 3 satellite was built by Lockheed Martin and the rocket was launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida. This was after four previous attempts to launch the satellite were aborted earlier in the week due to weather issues and technical glitches.
In the process, SpaceX also surpassed its record of the maximum number of launches in a year. This was its 21st launch of 2018 whereas the previous record was that of 18 launches in 2017.
The primary aim of this mission is to replace an old GPS that has been in orbit since 1997.0
