In a bid to diversify the economy of Saudi Arabia and move away from crude oil export, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has unveiled plans to to develop a zero emissions city.

Called ‘The Line,’ this 170-kilometre-long development will be a part of the futuristic $500 billion project called ‘Neom.’ To be built on a budget of $100 billion to 200 billion, The Line is being described as a walkable “belt of hyper-connected future communities, without cars and roads and built around nature.”

It will have the ability to house 1 million residents and will contain all basic amenities such as schools, health centres, and green spaces. Also, artificial intelligence will play a huge role in this new venture.

The construction of this eco-friendly city, which the Prince has claimed will be a “revolution to mankind”, is due to begin in the first quarter of this year.

A news release also said that The Line will make use of ultra-high-speed transit and autonomous mobility solutions and no journey within this city will be longer than 20 minutes.

“The backbone of investment in The Line will come from the $500 billion support to Neom by the Saudi government, PIF and local and global investors over 10 years,” the prince told reporters in Al-Ula, referring to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
