The Nicaragua Zoo welcomed a new member into its family recently!

Nieve – meaning snow in Spanish, a very rare white tiger, was born at the zoo in Masaya recently. It is the first-ever white tiger born in captivity in the country.

Born to a pair of yellow and black coloured Bengal tigers, Nieve had been rejected by its mother because she could not produce enough milk and is currently being raised by humans.

The Director of the zoo, Eduardo Sacasa said that Nieve was born in late December last year and weighed just under a kilogramme at birth.

Sacasa’s wife Marina Arguello is currently taking care of the cub, bottle-feeding it every three hours.

The international non-governmental organization and animal welfare and conservation group WWF describes white tigers as “a genetic anomaly”, with none known to exist in the wild.

According to the zoo, Nieve’s mother had inherited this rare gene from her grandfather, who was white.
