Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the leader of the New Democracy party, was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Greece on 8th July 2019 after his party won the election, defeating the Syriza party led by the outgoing Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
The centre-right New Democracy party won 39.85 per cent of the votes compared to Syriza’s 31.35 per cent. The New Democracy party won a majority of 158 seats in the 300-seat Greek parliament.
The swearing-in ceremony was held in Athens at the Presidential mansion. Mitsotakis was accompanied by his wife and three children.
In an economy plagued by financial recession, poverty, and high unemployment, Mitsotakis promised to lower taxes, improve growth, and bring in more investments.
Who is Kyriakos Mitsotakis?
Born in Athens on 4th March 1968, Kyriakos Mitsotakis belongs to a family of politicians. He is the son of former Prime Minister of Greece, Konstantinos Mitsotakis who served as the Prime Minister from 1990 to 1993. The Harvard and Stanford educated politician has served as the President of the New Democracy party since 2016.
His sister Dora Bakoyannis was serving as the Mayor of Athens when it was host to the Olympic Games in 2004. She has also held the position of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Greek government. Also, Kostas Bakoyannis, the elected mayor of Athens is his nephew.
