35th ASEAN Summit underway in Bangkok, Thailand

The 35th ASEAN Summit is currently underway in Bangkok in Thailand. It started on 31st October 2019 and will end on 4th November 2019.

Thailand holds the chairmanship of ASEAN this year, under the theme of “advancing partnership for sustainability.”

The heads of state of the 10 member nations of the ASEAN will attend the summit. However, the heads of dialogue partner nations that include India, USA, China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Australia, and New Zealand will also participate in the summit.

The Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha inaugurated the summit at IMPACT Convention Complex in Bangkok.

What is ASEAN?

ASEAN stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. It is an intergovernmental association for 10 Southeast Asian countries and includes Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia. The association encourages political, social, and economic cooperation and collaboration.

It was established on 8th August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand by the founding nations of the ASEAN – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

Brunei subsequently joined on 7 January 1984, Vietnam on 28 July 1995, Laos and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999, making up what is today the ten Member States of ASEAN.

The secretariat of ASEAN is in Jakarta, Indonesia and its motto is “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”.
