Pixar’s Short Film Purl Highlights Gender Inequality at Workplace

It Highlights the Disparity Faced by Women at Workplace, From a Woman’s Point of View.

Pixar’s new short film Purl takes head on the issue of gender inequality at the workplace. The animated film is by director Kristen Lester. The short animation is quite relevant in today’s times. It highlights the disparity faced by women at the workplace, from a woman’s point of view.

The film is about a ball of yarn Purl. She gets recruited at a corporate B.R.O Corporation. This office is highly dominated by men, who don’t seem to like the friendly and cute Purl. The movie depicts how they get uncomfortable and avoid Purl at every chance they get. Purl, on the other hand, tries to do everything to fit in.

The film shows how she is slighted and overlooked in the office by her colleagues. After trying hard to “fit in,” she gets disheartened and is about to quit. But then things take a turn for the better when she knits herself a suit. Now Purl looks like one of them. Her male colleagues start getting comfortable around her. She gets heard and noticed. Purl totally changes herself to become like one of them.

The movie then goes on to show that one day another ball of yarn joins the company. And Purl is hit with the revelation of how much she has changed. She decides to be nice to the ball of yarn and soon her colleagues also accept her.

Towards the end of the movie, it is seen how the workplace changes drastically as more and more females join the office.

The movie is hard hitting. It portrays very effectively the discrimination faced by women in the workplace. Even though we celebrate Women’s Day every year and talk big about gender equality, the reality is very different.

Women form a very small part of the workforce around the world. And those who are working don’t get equal treatment and opportunities in their workplaces. Be it in movies or corporate, women are less paid than their male counterparts. Despite working the same hours and maybe sometimes, even more, their pay package is nowhere even close to what their male colleagues earn.

Let’s hope this movie is able to make people sit up and notice. It sensitizes them about gender inequality and challenges faced by women in the workplace. The movie may be brief, but it sends across a lasting message!
