Meet Mayur Shelke, the braveheart who risked his life to save a child

Recently a video of a Railways pointsman in India saving the life of a little boy by pushing him away from a speeding train went viral.

The pointsman was Mayur Shelke, who works with Central Railway at the Mumbai station. Shelke was hailed as a hero when surveillance camera of the Indian Railways captured him running towards a speeding train and rescuing a six-year old boy, who had fallen on the railway tracks. Shelke ran towards the boy and pushed him away from the train just seconds before the speeding train crossed the area where the boy had fallen.

Video footage showed the little boy accompanied with his visually-impaired mother, who carrying a heavy rucksack, walking on the platform of the Thane station. The boy stumbled, lost his balance, and then fell on the railway tracks.

The video of Shelke’s heroic act went viral and Shelke earned massive respect and appreciation from all quarters for risking his own life and saving that of another.

So amazed were the Railway officials with Shelke’s act that the Indian Minister for Railways, Piyush Goyal, announced a reward of 50,000 rupees for him.

But, Shelke, being the hero that he is, announced that he would donate half of the reward amount towards the education of the child that he saved!

“I’ll give half of the amount, given to me as token of appreciation, for that child’s welfare & education. I came to know that his family isn’t financially strong. So I decided this,” Shelke told news agency ANI.

As the news of this selfless deed of Shelke spread, he was saluted, once more, for his spirit, exemplary courage, and magnanimity.
