Luxembourg, one of the smallest countries in Europe, is set to become the first nation ever to provide free public transport. Though this landlocked country has an area of only over 2,500 square kilometers, it is plagued by massive traffic woes. In a bid to reduce the congestion, protect the environment, and improve social welfare, recently re-elected Prime Minister Xavier Bettel has proposed to make public transport available free of charge from 2020.

The capital of the country, Luxembourg City is a huge business hub and hundred thousands of commuters from neighbouring countries such as Belgium, France, and Germany cross the borders of the country every day, exacerbating the congestion.
