Luka Modric, the captain of the Croatian national football team, won the Ballon d’Or for 2018. He has had an exceptional year, guiding his team to its first final of the World Cup along with winning the Champions League in playing for Real Madrid. He was also the best player of the tournament in the World Cup 2018 held in July. By winning this award, he became the first footballer in ten years other than Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo to win the coveted trophy.

Christiano Ronaldo from Portugal and Antoine Griezmann from France stood second and third respectively.

The Ballon d’Or is a trophy awarded by the France Football each year. It was initially awarded only to European players but expanded to include all players of the world in 2007.
