Argentina’s navy submarine – ARA San Juan, a German-built diesel-electric TR-1700 class submarine, was found deep in Atlantic waters near Valdes Peninsula in Argentine Patagonia. This was almost after a year after disappearing with 44 crewmen aboard on 15 November 2017. It lost contact while returning to its base in the coastal city of Mar del Plata. Soon after, Argentina was aided by 18 countries in an intense search operation. However, the submarine was not found.
The discovery was finally announced after the Argentine navy received a positive identification by a remote-operated submersible from the American ship Ocean Infinity that was hired to boost the search.
