To reinforce how the first woman Vice-President of the United States, Kamala Harris has shattered the glass ceiling by holding the second-highest office in the US, a unique portrait of hers made with broken glass was unveiled in front of the Lincoln Memorial recently.

Created by Swiss artist Simon Berger and based on a color photo of Harris taken by photographer Celeste Sloman (represented by ATRBUTE, New York), the 6.5-feet tall and 6.5-feet wide painting has been set up to commemorate the historic achievement of the 56-year-old Harris. The installation has been created by creative agency BBH New York, with production partnership from M ss ng P eces.

Berger creates these sculptures with an innovative methodology: he first draws the outline of the face on the glass. Then, he uses a hammer delicately to tap on laminated glass to create small cracks that create the shape of a face when viewed in totality.

“Representation matters, especially at the ballot box, and the inauguration of Kamala Harris as the first woman, and first woman of colour, to serve as vice president of the United States is a landmark moment in American history,” said Holly Hotchner, president and CEO of the National Women’s History Museum.

The unique sculpture will also contain a QR code which viewers can scan to take them to an Instagram Spark AR.

“We hope that women – of all ages and backgrounds – will see their own strength and potential reflected in the portrait of our first woman vice president,” said Amani Duncan, President of BBH New York. “This incredible work of art featuring interactive elements is a rallying moment for all organizations to work together to advance gender equity and address the issues facing women and other marginalized genders.”
