Jair Bolsonaro Sworn in as Brazil President

Jair Bolsonaro sworn in as Brazil President

Brazil’s far-right leader and a former army captain Jair Bolsonaro, 63, was sworn-in as the President of Brazil in the capital city Brasilia. He was elected the President of Brazil in October 2018 after defeating the left-wing leader Fernando Haddad.

He rose to victory based on campaign promises of a crackdown on corruption and crime, and a resurgence of a dwindling Brazilian economy. However, Bolsonaro is seen as a divisive personality in Brazil – he has also been in the news for his demeaning comments against the minorities, the LGBT community, and women.

There were several international heads of state present to witness the swearing-in ceremony. Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban, and U.S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo were present.
