Indian City of Hampi Makes It to the NYT List of 52 Places to Go in 2019

The picturesque villages of India have been tourist magnets since time immemorial. Foreign tourists go there to feast their eyes on the idyllic landscapes and the old world charm. India is called India incredible for a reason!

Hampi, located near Hospet Town of Karnataka district, has bagged the second place in the recent list of 52 places to go in 2019 published by theNew York Times. It is also the only site from India that made it to the list on which Puerto Rico bagged the number one spot.

Santa Barbara from California, Panama from Central America, and Munich from the German Federal State of Bavaria were at third, fourth, and fifth positions respectively.

The ancient village of Hampi has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It reportedly attracted over 5.35 lakh tourists in 2016-17, of which 38,000 were foreigners.

Hampi, which was the centre of the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century, is now famous for its historical heritage. Dating back to the days of its glory, Hampi was a vast, prosperous and majestic city situated near the banks of Tungabhadra river. Expectedly, it was India’s richest city and had commercial ties with Persia and Portugal.

The intriguing stone temples, monoliths, and other architectures depicting the Hindu deities are a sight to behold. In Hampi, there are as many as 1,600 monuments along with six Jain temples and a Muslim mosque and tomb.
