Former PepsiCo Chief Indra Nooyi joins Amazon board

Indra Nooyi, the former Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo, has joined the board of directors of Amazon in February 2019. She will serve as a member of the audit committee.

Nooyi was an integral part of PepsiCo and held various leadership positions before she stepped down in October 2018. She served as the CEO for 12 years from October 2006 to October 2018, the fifth person to hold the position in the organization’s history. Before that, she also held the position of the Chairman of the board from May 2007 to February 2019. Prior to that, she was inducted into the board in 2001 and was also serving as the Chief Financial Officer of the organization then.

She had a prominent role to play in enhancing PepsiCo’s image as a healthy brand. She spearheaded its acquisition of Tropicana, the juice company. She also played a key role in the merger with Quaker Oats.

She has consistently been ranked as one of the most influential business leaders and the powerful women in the world. Remarkably, she was also appointed as the first independent female director on the board of the International Cricket Council.

She is the second woman of colour to be added to Amazon’s board of directors in recent times. Earlier in the month, Amazon added the Chief Operating Officer of Starbucks, Rosalind Brewer to its board. Interestingly, Amazon has been increasingly looking at adding more diversity to its board of directors. With this appointment, Amazon now has 5 women on its board of 11 members, including Brewer, Jamie Gorelick, Judith McGrath and Patricia Stonesifer.
