Bayern Munich win record 20th German Cup

Bayern Munich beat Bayer Leverkusen by a comprehensive 4-2 margin to win a record 20th German Cup and 13th domestic double, remaining well in course for a historic treble.

In the past twenty years, it has won the German Cup a record 10 times and this is its second consecutive win. The team with the second highest number of wins is Werder Bremen, who has won six times.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the match was played without an audience at the 75,000-seater Olympic Stadium in Berlin. With strict measures for hygiene and distancing, a total of 691 spectators were allowed, which included German coach Joachim Low.

The first goal for Bayern Munich was a free kick by David Alaba; it was followed by another by Serge Gnabry. The third and fourth were by Polish Robert Lewandowski, who also passed 50 goals for the season with this one.

Sven Bender and Kai Havertz scored the two goals for Bayer Leverkusen.

With this win, Bayern Munich, which has also won its eighth straight Bundesliga title, also set a new club record of going 26 games without being defeated. In this span, the club has drawn only one match since December.

Also awarded the man of the match for his fantastic performance, Lewandowski said, “In the second half we showed that we are the better team and wanted to be cup winners.”

Bayern will now eye the Champions League to complete a historic treble.
