Tesco launches online refillable container trials for UK customers

In a fantastic bid to reduce wastes and cut down on plastics, supermarket giant Tesco is piloting an initiative in the United Kingdom to bring to online shoppers products in reusable packaging.

Tesco is collaborating with Loop, widely considered a zero-waste shopping platform, which would deliver as many as 150 items to customers in reusable containers. The items include shampoos, sauces, drinks, yogurt, and toothpaste, among others.

Some of the brands that are part of the initiative are Heinz Tomato Ketchup, Coca-Cola, Danone yogurt, and Persil washing liquid.

Tom Szaky, the chief executive of Loop, said the UK service would start off as a pilot, but would be delivering to the whole of the UK mainland, including Northern Ireland.

So how does this initiative work?

All customers have to do is order their chosen products in the durable and reusable packaging from the Loop website. Loop would then deliver the orders in a reusable tote bag rather than the conventional cardboard boxes or plastic bags. Once the customers are done using the product, they can put the empty containers back in the tote bag, which will be picked up by an executive. The containers will, subsequently, be professionally cleaned and refilled.

Dave Lewis, Tesco Group chief executive, said in a statement: “Our ground-breaking partnership with Loop has been designed to test a new way of helping customers use less plastic and explore the exciting potential of reuse.

“We will learn what works at scale as we develop plans with Loop to introduce reusable packaging into our business.”

If this pilot is successful, it will be introduced in-store in Tesco after an year.
