21 June is International Day of Yoga

International Day of Yoga is observed on 21st June each year by the United Nations. This day seeks to raise awareness about the ancient physical, mental, and spiritual practice of Yoga and underscore its importance in today’s times.

Also, with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, there is a definitive increase in the instance of depression, anxiety, and fear. Adapting to a lifestyle without social contact has been challenging and this has resulted in mental health issues exacerbating world over. In these bleak and uncertain times, Yoga not only provides mental stability and peace, mitigating anxiety and fears but also provides much-needed physical exercise.

Theme for International Day of Yoga 2020

In 2020, the 6th International Day of Yoga will be celebrated. The theme for International Day of Yoga 2020 is ‘Yoga for Health – Yoga at Home.’

In view of the various social distancing practices adopted by nations across the world to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s theme seeks to encourage the practice of Yoga at home.

History of International Day of Yoga

The draft resolution for establishing the International Day of Yoga was introduced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 69th session of the General Assembly in 2014. The resolution was endorsed by a record 175 member nations of the United Nations General Assembly.

Prime Minister Modi, on introducing the proposal, famously said, “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition. Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action … a holistic approach [that] is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.”

As a result, the first International Day of Yoga was observed in 2015.
