Europe’s First Underwater Restaurant – Under

The largest underwater restaurant in the world and Europe’s first such restaurant – ‘Under’ – has opened recently in Norway. And the name could not have been more apt because ‘Under’ also means ‘wonder’ in Norwegian.

The beautiful restaurant is located 5 metres below the sea off the coast of Lindesnes, Norway and is partly submerged in the North Sea. It has been designed by the renowned Norwegian architectural firm Snoehetta. Brothers Stig and Gaute Ubostad own this masterpiece, which they believe will attract around 12,000 guests each year.

The restaurant covers an area of 495-square-metres and has been created in the shape of a sunken periscope. Its massive panoramic window gives the diners a majestic look of the marine life outside. According to Stig Ubostad, the Nordic marine life is significantly different from the tropical ones and he wanted to show visitors the marine life in the Nordic seas is like.

Also, the head chef Nicolai Ellitsgaard has prepared an extensive menu and had been working on it for over a year and a half. Most of the items on the menu are absolutely fresh and have been foraged for in the waters close to the restaurant. The sumptuous 18-course meal along with drinks for one person costs around 3,700 krone or 380 euros.

But, what is wonderful is that outside of the regular hours, Under will function as a laboratory for marine biologists so that they can study fish behaviour and patterns.

While such underwater restaurants are common in Asia, especially in the Maldives, this is the first such restaurant in Europe.
