In a positive move to counter the detrimental impact of plastic on the environment, the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) – one of the biggest chains of hotels – is doing away with plastic toiletries.

Guests will find bulk-sized toiletries from 2021 onwards, which will replace the travel-sized bottles of bath gel, shampoo, conditioner, and other bathroom products. It aims to implement this initiative across more than 5,600 hotels that it owns across the globe. This will result in a massive 200 million small tubes and bottles of plastic being replaced.

As part of our ongoing efforts to reduce plastic waste, we’re delighted to announce that every IHG hotel worldwide will switch to bulk-size bathroom amenities – replacing miniatures. Good things come in big packages… #truehospitality https://t.co/7ROtM4YyvA pic.twitter.com/jzUhPG0zFY

One of the first global hotel chains to do so, InterContinental owns renowned brands such as Holiday Inn, Six Senses, Crown Plaza, Staybridge Suites, and Kimpton.

The InterContinental Group is also introducing a host of other initiatives to tackle climate change. For instance, it aims to eliminate plastic straws from all its hotels by the end of this year. Further, in many of its properties, it uses duvet and pillow covers that are made from 100 per cent recyclable material. Also, its high-end resort brand, Six Senses has pledged to go plastic-free across its supply chain in the next three years.

Isn’t this a great move by this brand? We believe more hospitality brands should follow suit. Do you agree? Let us know your views in the comments section below.
