In an initiative to reduce the use of plastic and shed its plastic polluter image, Coca-Cola is launching a new bottle in a brand new size that is made up of 100 per cent recycled plastic.

The bottle is of the capacity of 13.2-ounces and will be available in select states across America, which include New York, California, Connecticut, and Florida. It will be available across the United States by summer.

This design will be used for beverages such as Coke, Diet Coke, and Coke Zero Sugar. Sprite will also be sold in these bottles in a few markets.

The recycled bottles will include a “Recycle Me Again” message on the label. The cap and the label of these bottles, however, will not be made of plastic.

“We’ve been listening to consumers and they have been telling us they want something a little smaller and a little more easyto consume,” Alpa Sutaria, Coca-Cola’s general manager of sustainability, told CNN Business. “We took this opportunity to make a bottle with plastic that’s 100% recyclable.”

This initiative comes after Coca-Cola was ranked as the biggest plastic polluter of 2020 by Break Free From Plastic, a global movement aimed at reducing plastic consumption, in its Annual Audit Report. Unfortunately, the brand is consistently rates as one of the world’s biggest plastic polluters.

Coca-Cola confirmed that this initiative will reduce its plastic usage by 20 per cent.

“We’re determined to innovate and to develop technology to minimize our impact,” Sutaria said, adding the company is “following through our commitment with real action.”

In 2018, Coca-Cola announced the World Without Waste campaign by means of which it seeks to collect and recycle one bottle or can for each one it sells by the year 2030.

Experts also believe that this move will lure young customers who are increasingly environmentally conscious and are seeking sustainable packaging.

This certainly is a welcome move by Coca-Cola. Do you agree? Let us know your views in the comments section below.
