Wimbledon 2019: Novak Djokovic wins fifth Championship

The most renowned grand slam of the year has come to an end. The Wimbledon Championships have ended and some absolutely stunning tennis has been played over the past few weeks.

Here are the final results of the Championships.

Men’s Singles

Defending champion Novak Djokovic defeated tennis legend Roger Federer 7-6(5), 1-6, 7-6(4), 4-6, 13-12(3) in the longest final ever played at the Wimbledon to win his fifth Wimbledon Championship. Lasting close to five hours, the match saw Djokovic save two championship points to retain his title.

Djokovic has earlier won the Championship in 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2018. With this win, he has won 16 grand slams, four behind Roger Federer and two behind Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

The 37-year-old Federer, widely considered as the greatest tennis player of his generation, put up a great fight against the defending champion, showing what champions are really made up of.

The nail-biting final, which was highly anticipated by tennis fans across the world, was watched by quite a few celebrities including the Duke of Kent and the Duchess of Cambridge.

Women’s Singles 

Simona Halep of Romania defeated American Serena Williams 6-2, 6-2 in under an hour to seal her first Wimbledon Championships ever. She also became the first Romanian to win the Wimbledon ever.

After the match, Halep admitted that this was the best match she had ever played. Her win kept Serena Williams from surpassing Margaret Court’s record of 24 majors.

German Angelique Kerber, the defending champion, lost her second-round game to American Lauren Davis.

Men’s Doubles

Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah from Colombia defeated French players Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin to lift the men’s doubles title.

Women’s Doubles

In the women’s doubles contest, Barbora Styrcova from the Czech Republic and Hseih Su-wei of Taiwan defeated top seeds China’s Xu Yifan and Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski to claim the women’s doubles title.
