West Indies cricket captain Kieron Pollard became the only third player ever to smash six sixes in an international over when he did so in the first T20 match against Sri Lanka at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Osbourn, Antigua.

This resulted in the host nation securing a lead in the three-match T20 series.

He achieved this remarkable feat in an over bowled by off-spinner Akila Dananjaya who had taken a hattrick in just the previous over.

Pollard joined the exclusive club of cricketers that have achieved this astounding feat, which includes Herschelle Gibbs from South Africa and Yuvraj Singh from India. While Gibbs achieved this against the Netherlands in the 2007 World Cup, Singh hit six sixes in the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup against England.

“I felt after hitting a couple of sixes, I understood how the pitch plays, it was important to be positive and play your shots,” said Pollard.

“A couple of things went through my mind before the sixth ball, I thought: should I go for the six or take the 30 runs in the over? He went around the wicket and bowled it on to my pads, I told myself: ‘Wait Polly, take a chance.’ That’s how I have played my cricket all along, especially against the spinners.”

Though he was out in the next over scoring 38 runs, his effort helped the host nation win the match.

Both Herschelle Gibbs and Yuvraj Singh tweeted their messages for Pollard:
