Serbian Novak Djokovic beat Russian Daniil Medvedev in straight sets 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 at the Rod Laver Arena to capture a record-extending ninth Australian Open title. He now has a 100 per cent record at the Australian Open, winning nine of the nine Australian Open finals that he has reached.

With this win, he has captured 18 Grand Slam titles until now, just 2 short of all-time greats Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who have 20 Grand Slam wins to their credit.

The world number one also joined 13-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal as only the second man to win nine or more titles at the same Grand Slam event.

“On the court, Daniil is one of the toughest players I have ever faced in my life. It’s only a matter of time before you hold a Grand Slam trophy,” said Novak Djokovic, in the trophy ceremony. “If you can wait a few more years, I’d appreciate it. It’s amazing that he has put together a 20-match winning streak over the past few months.”

He also appreciated the organizing team for putting together the Grand Slam despite the pandemic.

“I think it was a very successful tournament and I’d like to praise [tournament director] Craig Tiley for a tremendous effort,” said Djokovic. “It was challenging on many different levels and Tennis Australia should be very proud for making it possible.”

This is just an outstanding achievement by Djokovic, and is certainly a testimony to the fact that he is one of the best tennis players of his generation. Isn’t it?
