Mary Kom and Son Heung-Min awarded best Asian athletes

South Korean football sensation Son Heung-Min and renowned Indian female boxer Mary Kom were awarded the best Asian Male and Female athletes at the recently held inaugural ‘Awards for Asia’ ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

The best Asian Male Team Award was awarded to the Qatar national football team, which won the most recent edition of the Asian Cup. Further, the best Asian Female Team was awarded to the Japan national football team.

The ceremony was organized by the Asian Sportswriters Union and the awards were given away by the Chief Minister of Selangor, YAB Tuan Haji Amirudin Shari.

Son Heung-Min from South Korea is the captain of the South Korean national football team and also plays as a forward for the Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. He was the captain when the team won the gold medal at the Asian Games in 2018. Son has also had many records to his credit – he is the topmost Asian goalscorer in the history of the Premier League. Further, he was also the most expensive Asian player in history when he was signed by Tottenham for a record 22 million pounds.

Mary Kom from India is the only woman in the world to win the World Boxing Championship for a record six times. She has won golds at both, the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. For her massive contribution to the field of sports, she has been awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honour given away by the government of India.
