With the world fighting against global warming and climate change, the organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are also doing their bit.
In a bid to make the Games more sustainable, the podiums for winners of the events of the 2020 Olympics will be made from recycled plastic. This is the first time in the history of the Games that such an event will occur.
Organizers estimate that they will need around 45 tonnes of plastic to make 100 podiums. The plastic for these podiums will be donated by local residents or will be collected from the sea. From June 13th onwards, over 2,000 stores of the supermarket chain AEON will house collection boxes, whereby residents can deposit any unwanted plastic items. Also, any plastic collected from oceans during marine clean-up drives will be used.
The organizers of this mega event are doing all they can to make this event more environment-friendly.
The medals for the winners of various events will also be made by recycling electronic wastes – recycled material collected from old mobile phones and other electronic devices. The organizing committee of the Games had, earlier in the year, launched a project to collect metal from the public to create these medals.
Also, the runners in the torch relay will wear uniforms that will partially be made from recycled plastic bottles.
The Olympic torch is also being made from recyclable aluminium that was used to make the temporary shelter for those affected by the Fukushima earthquake.
