2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships are underway

The 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships are underway in Doha, Qatar – the first time that the event is being held in the Middle East. The event, which is the seventeenth edition of the World Championships, started on 27th September and will continue till 6th October 2019.

The venue for the event is the Khalifa International Stadium, which has long been the cornerstone of Qatar’s sporting tradition.

Over 3,500 athletes from over 200 nations across the world are participating in the event.

Results of events

In the men’s category, Christian Coleman of the United States won the gold at the 100 metres event with a record timing of 9.76 seconds while Noah Lyles from the United States won the gold at the 200 metres event with a timing of 19.83 seconds. Donavan Brazier of the United States won the gold in the 800 metres category while Muktar Edris from Ethiopia won the gold in the 5000 metres category.

In the women’s category, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica won the gold at the 100 metres event with a timing of 10.71 seconds, becoming the first mother and the oldest woman to win the gold at the Championships ever. Halimah Nakaayi of Uganda won gold in the 800 metres category.

The mascot for the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships

The official mascot for the Championship is Falah, an athletic falcon dressed in the maroon colour of the Qatari flag. It was created by Theodore Paul Manuel, a Filipino expat living in Qatar since 2010. The mascot was selected after dozens of sketches were submitted to the organizing committee and a multi-stage voting process was duly followed.

Falah has five main values: he is competitive, courageous, fun, helpful, and loyal.

What are the IAAF World Athletics Championships?

Commonly referred to as the World Championships in Athletics, the World Athletics Championships are held once in two years by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

The first of these Championships was held in 1983, when it was held once in four years. From 1991, it is held once in two years.
