DC Comics is introducing Jess Chambers, aka Kid Quick, a nonbinary version of Flash very soon. To be ushered in DC’s “Future Slate” event taking place in January and February 2021, this gender fluid character will use the pronoun they/them.

Created by Ivan Cohen and Eleonara Carlini, Kid Quick will debut as part of an alternate-universe version of the Teen Titans in “DC’s Very Merry Multiverse,” an 80-page holiday-themed comic book anthology that is due to hit stores on 9th December this year.

Kid Quick, whose aunt is Jesse Quick, will inherit The Flash mantle in Future State: Justice League.

In a significant shift to introducing LQBTQ characters, Kid Quick joins the nonbinary character Lee Serano, who first appeared in an installment of the Super Girl comics, and original character Doctor Endless, who is gender fluid. Also, in 2019, DC introduced The Aerie, a nonbinary anti-hero, in Suicide Squad.

“The DC Universe has always been fertile ground for new and refreshing takes on our characters, and DC Future State definitely contributes to this legacy,” said Marie Javins, DC Comics’ executive editor, in a news release. “When the event begins in January, some savvy readers will not only pick up on some of the breadcrumbs that have already been tossed out in our current titles, but they will also find new hints and clues of what’s to come in 2021.”
