The BAFTA Awards of the United Kingdom for 2020 were awarded recently.

And the period war-film 1917 led the pack with a total of seven awards including best film and best director. In winning the best director award, Sam Mendes became the first British winner of the best director at the BAFTAs since Danny Boyle won the award more than a decade back in 2009 for Slumdog Millionaire.

Joaquin Phoenix, who won the best actor trophy, for his stupendous performance in the movie Joker. In his acceptance speech, he also called out the ‘systemic racism’ in the film industry. The BAFTAs were criticized for the lack of diversity among the nominees.

Phoenix’s speech was widely praised by artists across the world, with many agreeing with the facts that he brought in.

Meanwhile, the best actress trophy went to Renee Zellweger for her performance in the film ‘Judy.’

Brad Pitt and Laura Dern walked away with the best supporting actor and actress trophy for their performances in ‘Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood’ and ‘Marriage Story’ respectively, making this the first time since 1977 when Americans have won all four major acting awards.
