The International Literary Day is observed each year on the 8 September. This day seeks to underscore the importance of literacy to individuals and the society in today’s world and to address the challenges associated with making people across the world literate.

Theme for International Literacy Day 2019

The theme for the International Literacy Day 2019 is ‘Literacy and Multilingualism.’

“When humanity loses a language, we also lose the potential for greater diversity in art, music, literature, and oral traditions.” ~ Bogre Udell

According to various reports, 90 per cent of the languages of the world might disappear by the end of this century. Also, 40 per cent of the 7,000 languages spoken today are endangered. While globalization has enriched the world, it has also, sadly, made many regional languages become obsolete at an alarming pace. The theme for this year seeks to embrace linguistic diversity and promote multilingualism.

History of International Literacy Day

The idea of this day was born in 1965 at the World Conference of Ministers on the Eradication of Illiteracy held in Tehran, the capital of Iran. Subsequently, the General Conference of UNESCO proclaimed 8th September as International Literacy Day.

Since then, various events are held across the world to mark this day and to encourage and advance literacy at regional, national, and international levels.

Why is literacy important?

It is important to the economic development of an individual and the community

The overall economy of a nation increases when there is an increase in the literacy levels among its citizens. Literate people are able to pull themselves out of poverty and better their own economic conditions. And, with more employed and literate citizens, a nation’s progress is inevitable.

It is important to the well-being of a community

People that are literate are able to communicate effectively with others, sharing their ideas and understanding those of others. This, in turn, builds a successful and dynamic community that leads to more productivity and innovation.

It helps in personal growth

Apart from just economic development, literacy helps in the personal growth of a person. It makes him more informed of the society and the world as a whole, broadening his horizons and making him more knowledgable.

Happy International Literacy Day, folks!
